Travis Kvapil (Ford No 28) chose the Talladega Superspeedway to claim his first ever pole in NASCAR Saturday afternoon for Sunday's Amp Energy 500.

Casey Mears (Chevy No 5) was second fastest while Aric Almirola (Chevy No 8) was third.

Sprint Cup point leader Jimmie Johnson (Chevy No 48) will start 20th while second-place Carl Edwards (Ford No 99) will start 12th.

Though he ran the 37th best time, Canadian Patrick Carpentier (Dodge No 10) was pushed back in the 45th place according to the owner's points system.

Consequently, he had to pack up, go home and he will miss the race. Sam Hornish Jr. (Dodge No 77) was the other only driver to pack up and go home.
