Peper says the 2007 Avalanche will at first come in LS, LT and LTZ models, using either 2WD or 4WD, with a Z71 off-road package to follow at the end of the year.

No matter the trim level or the drivetrain, every Avalanche will come with unmatched flexibility, which Peper described as "enabling it to function as an SUV, truck or both, thanks to the unique Midgate."

The Midgate opens to extend the cargo-carrying capability from the cargo bed's 1.6-metre length to 2.5 metres, which is slightly (51 mm) longer than previous models.

The rear seat must be folded to achieve maximum storage capability, to be sure, but with the rear seat up and the Midgate closed Avalanche has room for up to six passengers.

When the Midgate is open and the rear seat is folded flat, Avalanche can carry those legendary 4X8 sheets of plywood or drywall with the tailgate closed.

"Storage compartments alongside the cargo box provide ample and lockable storage," Peper said, adding that they also have drains, so they can be filled with ice and used as coolers. A three-piece rigid cargo cover with interlocking panels also is optional.

Peper noted that the new features on the '07 model "enhance Avalanche's flexible attributes and reflect customer feedback." They include:
  • Locking and unlocking the tailgate is more secure, as those functions are now handled by the interior lock switches or from the remote keyfob.
  • Remote vehicle starting is standard on some models and optional on others, and this allows convenient start-up from a distance so the driver can pre-heat or pre-cool the vehicle's interior. This might sound like a toy to anyone who's never used it, but people who already have it are loath to give it up.
  • New straps allow the cargo covers to be held securely in place when removed from the storage compartments.

Avalanche also has a new tailgate that is spring-loaded to reduce the effort needed to open or close it.

The standard engine on 2WD models is the 5.3-litre V-8 with 320 hp and 340 lb-ft of torque which offers Active Fuel Management.

On AWD Avalanche models, the 5.3-litre aluminum-block V-8 delivers an estimated 310 hp and 335 lb-ft of torque.

The 6-litre V-8 will come later in the model year and will be available on 2WD and 4WD models and deliver 355 hp.

The engines are attached to different four-speed automatic transmissions.

Peper said the interior of the 2007 Avalanche that you reach through easier-to-open doors "represents significant new levels of refinement, comfort, quality and convenience."
