Pretty much lost amid the understandable rush at the LA and Detroit auto shows to see what new cars were being introduced for the real world to buy was the reveal of the latest Rolls-Royce, the Corniche.

With an MSRP of $529,990, the new Corniche competes in a market segment that is too small to warrant any of the existing descriptors short of pin-sized.

But pin-sized is about the last word you'd use to describe the new Corniche, since it has a "kerbside" unladen weight of 2735 kg, is 5405 mm long and 2058 mm wide at the mirrors.

Just as big are the power numbers from the 6.75-litre, light-pressure turbocharged V8 -- 325 horsepower at 4000 rpm and 544 pound-feet of torque from 2100 to 2300 rpm.

Those are good enough ratings to propel the Corniche from 0-100 kmh in 8.5 seconds, though buyers of such yachts are rarely concerned with that.
