Total interior volume has been increased by 62 litres to 2835 litres (2506 for passengers and 328 for cargo), which means it is no longer a sub-compact car by US government measurement standards, but a compact car.

Along with more headroom up front (20 mm) and in the back (13 mm), the 2001 Sentra now also gets improved access to the front seats.

The driver's seat now has 8-way adjustments and features a design meant to provide an open feeling through the use of a large, one-piece cut pattern around the shoulder area. From this enhanced throne the driver gets to look at an instrument panel with a new gauge cluster with larger, easier-to-read figures.

In the back, a 60/40 split-fold rear seat with locking backs in standard on all models, covered in three types of knit cloth, depending upon model and trim levels.

Total storage capacity has been doubled and includes a box on the top of the instrument panel and a tray covering the front side sill cross-member. Front door pockets include a holder for 20-ounce drink containers.

Pulling all this around is the 1.8-litre DOHC inline-4, which produces 126 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 129 pound-feet of torque at 2400 rpm. In the sportier SE model, the 2-litre DOHC inline-4 cranks out 145 horsepower at 6400 rpm and 136 pound-feet of torque at 4800 rpm.Prices for the new Sentra have not been announced, but the current trend is to hold the line or actually reduce sticker prices. More on that in the near future.
