Lots of false information is circulating in the automotive realm about the ignorance of numerous people that write about automobiles and will sometimes risk themselves and talk a little about ecology. I've in fact had a very interesting discussion with the editor of automotive section of La Presse last week where I learned to him that ¾ of the information that their journalists were writing were erroneous.
2 examples:
It is false to say that hybrids consume as much fuel in winter as traditional cars. But I can say right away that during winter, my hybrid car uses about 4.2 litres per 100 km in combined city and highway driving.
The following most economic car, the Golf TDI, consumes 6.5 litres per 100 km and pollutes 6 times more. All vehicles use more fuel during winter. And the more it's cold, worse it gets. It's far from certain that diesel is the future. Although I've heard journalists say it over last few months, it's false to believe that diesels are now less polluting than the cleanest cars running on gas, and in Europe, the diesels' standards are always more indulgent than for gasoline-powered cars. As for ethanol, I will write on the subject next week. It's far from being as miraculous as we tend to believe...
See you next week.
