A panel of journalists from 23 European countries has just chosen the Opel / Vauxhall Insignia as their 2009 Car of the Year. Beating out 3 dozen other contenders for first place is a big deal for the brand, especially considering that twenty of the 59 voters ranked the machine in first place.

Insignia boasts a variety of innovative features, including the 'Opel Eye" which can read road signals, a 'Flex Ride' suspension system and Adaptive Forward Lighting with nine modes. Journalists consider looks and visual presentation of all models up for votes, as well as design, safety, handling and performance.

Hans Demant, Managing Director of Opel and V.P. of Engineering for General Motors Europe, says "we are extremely proud the Insignia has been named Car of the Year. This is confirmation of the hard work of our designers, engineers and workers; and their commitment to quality that makes the Insignia a true flagship for our brand."

Insignia is available to shoppers in a notch, hatchback, or wagon setup, and with seven available engines, including 3 diesels. It goes on sale in Europe later this year and into early 2009.
