Quebecker Patrick Carpentier has announced on Wednesday his intention to retire after the NASCAR Nationwide race at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, in Montreal, on August 20th.

It could also be the last race of the series in Montreal as the Quebec government has confirmed today that it will not provide any more financial support to the event in the future. Organisers were asking for $1M to offset part of the expected $1.6M in loss.

Carpentier has announced his retirement to Radio-Canada on Wednesday. He wanted to finish his career on the track where it all started, some 20 years ago, he explained.

Through the years, Carpentier raced in Formula Atlantic, then in CART, Champ Car and Indy Car (when the CART series split-up) and finally in NASCAR.

Father of two and resident of Las Vegas, Carpentier will take time to enjoy his family and take care of his contractor business.

He says the reflection to retire from racing took him three years. He has only been sparely present at race tracks since several seasons.
