Pininfarina, the Italian design studio that's responsible for designing almost every Ferrari sports car since the early 1950s, is shutting down its car production operations after more than 80 years. A total of 127 workers will be laid off.

Back in March, Pininfarina foreshadowed this turn of events by selling its stake in a car production joint venture with Volvo.

Throughout its history, Pininfarina has created no fewer than 250 models for various manufacturers. Some of these cars, such as the Ferrari Testarossa, Ferrari F40 and Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider, are today considered as true automotive icons.

More recently, Pininfarina was building the Ford Focus CC and Nissan Cube.

The company will now focus on its design and engineering operations while continuing development of electric vehicle technology.
