Porsche's August 2008 sales have gone down 45% in North America compared to the same time last year.

While this figure may seem alarming at first, it's explained by the imminent arrival of the 2009 Porsche 911. As the 2009 model year of the 911 has been upgraded, many buyers prefer to wait for its arrival, which is scheduled for September 20. The result: sales of the 911 alone fell 58%.

For 2009, a new direct injection system has been grafted onto the 911's engines, increasing their power and fuel efficiency.

A new 7-speed, dual-clutch transmission is also being introduced, replacing the old Tiptronic S. The 6-speed manual transmission remains unchanged.

The 2009 911's look has been touched up as well. The changes include a new front bumper, larger outside mirrors and LED daytime running lights and brake lights.

What's more, the 4-wheel-drive 911s will inherit a new AWD system derived from the current generation of the 911 Turbo. The 911 models equipped with this system will only be available from October 25.

Thanks to these updates, Porsche's sales should increase in the next few months. At least, that's what the manufacturer is hoping.
