GM Canada has announced pricing on the 2-mode hybrid variants of their award-winning Silverado and Sierra 1500 pickup models.
Hybrid pickups? You read that right. The automaker's proven 2-mode hybrid drive system, popularized in the Tahoe Hybrid, will now be available in pickup form to offer owners about 23 percent improved combined fuel consumption figures.
With the two-mode system on board, all-electric driving is possible at lower speeds, while the six-litre V8 engine employs some fuel-saving technologies like Active Fuel Management (AFM) and a specially tuned exhaust system to help optimize mileage when it has to run.
GM says the Sierra Hybrid will allow owners to realize fuel savings even when fully loaded or towing a trailer. A stability control system, trailering package and locking rear axle are standard on hybrid models- which will be sold in two or four-wheel-drive with towing capacity of up to 2,767 kg.
Pricing starts at $46,725 for a 2WD model, with a capable 4x4 starting at $50,875. Mileage figures averaging between 9.2 and 10.5 L/100km are boasted.
"For customers who need a full-size truck, including a 2,767 kg towing capacity, but also want significantly improved fuel efficiency, our hybrid pickup trucks are the clear answer," said Marc Comeau, VP of sales, service and marketing for GM of Canada. "GM has held the leadership when it comes to full-size pickup fuel efficiency for many years, but these hybrids take that to whole new levels. There is simply nothing else on the market that can match their combination of efficiency and performance."
Dealer deliveries start in early 2009.
