Wanted: a reasonable and fair strategy!
In order to avoid employment and growth problems, the European auto industry is looking for a reasonable and fair strategy to reduce CO2 emissions from cars. The goal set would be 120 g/km of CO2 by 2012.
Right now, the industry says governments and environmentalists put too much load on its shoulders and believes there are other, more profitable ways of reducing those emissions. After all, car traffic only accounts for 11 percent of all CO2 emissions in the European Union. Industry people consider that the goals recommended by the European Commission will lead to negative impacts not only on jobs but also on the industry as a whole.
The auto sector is a pillar of the European industry. There are about 12 million workers (and their families) who would like to see a fair and balanced CO2 regulation be implemented. Europe is the part of the world that produces the most vehicles, with 38 percent of the global production (46 million units). If the Commission goes ahead with its proposal, Europe's economic power would undoubtedly be affected.
