The last we heard, Saab was expecting to relaunch production this week. As we now know, the Hawtai deal fell threw, thwarting the Swedish automaker’s plans and forcing it to negotiate a new deal with Chinese distributor Pang Da. The company is currently poised to open discussions with its suppliers regarding its debts and is looking to get the assembly chains rolling again normally next week.
The plan, confirmed by the manufacturer’s head of production, isn’t set in stone, however, as Saab says it’s “very hard to make a prognosis” at this time.
According to Tom Muller, an analyst for Gilisen Bankiers in Amsterdam, “it's paramount Saab restarts production within a week or two” because “the trust in the company from potential car buyers has to be restored as soon as possible”.
FKG’s calculations show that Saab owes 47.2 million dollars to Swedish suppliers ant at least as much to foreign component makers.
FKG says discussions still hadn’t been started as of May 17, 2011.
