In six days, on January 7, 2008, NASCAR's Cup teams will begin testing at the Daytona International Speedway for the upcoming season.

Though they might not all reach full speed in testing (a practice known as "sandbagging"), we will know more about where every team stands.

Nonetheless, sports book in Las Vegas have begun posting the odds for the upcoming Sprint Cup season. Many specialised journalists and observers also have a fair idea of what might happen.

Odds seem to favour Jimmie Johnson (Chevy No 48) as the 2008 season champion again (the only driver to have won the championship three times in a row in modern NASCAR history was Cale Yarborough ,1976-77-78).

Other odds have Dale Earnhardt Jr (Chevy No 88) winning at least one race. Also to follow, Toyota winning more than one race, especially with Joe Gibbs racing and his drivers, Tony Stewart (No 20), Kyle Busch (No 18) and Denny Hamlin (No 11).

Keep in mind that there will be four open-wheel stars running for the Rookie of the Year title, Sam Hornish Jr. (Dodge No 77), Jacques Villeneuve (Toyota No 27), Dario Franchitti (Dodge No 40) and Patrick Carpentier (Dodge No 10) against oval veteran Regan Smith (Chevy No 1).

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
