The Quebec government, unsatisfied with the data accumulated during the first winter during which winter tires were mandatory, is about to announce a modification of the law in order to make studded tires a requirement on passenger cars.

"A small decrease in the number of accidents was noted this winter, but we were expecting a much bigger improvement. We must do better," said a Transport Quebec employee. He asked to preserve his anonymity while discussing with Auto123.com, knowing that this decision will probably not please the Quebec population at all.

While the amendment to the law could only be applied in two years, the government has not ruled out putting it into effect as early as next winter. In addition, the winter tire restriction period could be even longer.

Studded tires are currently authorized on Quebec roads from October 15th to May 1st.
