In 2007, the team from Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo (California) won the first Shell Eco-marathon Americas with a gasoline-powered vehicle that delivered an incredible 1,902.7 mpg -- or 0.1238 L/100 km. Needless to say that the stakes are high for 2008!

Over 50 teams (nearly double the entries from the2007 event) from North and South America will try to break this mark by taking part in the 2008 Shell Eco-marathon Americas. It may not be the fastest race you've ever seen, but it's probably the most fuel-efficient.

After many successful years in Europe, the Shell Eco-marathon came back to the Americas earlier this year and will again take place in 2008, from April 10-13, at the California Speedway in Fontana. The Eco-marathon concept started as the Shell Mileage Marathon in 1939 between employees of Shell at a research laboratory in Wood River, Illinois. People were already starting to develop a green conscience back then.

In Europe, the 2008 Shell Eco-marathon project will take place from May 22-24 at the Nogaro Circuit, in France. The competition will follow about the same recipe as previous editions.
