With power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering and optional 225/65R17 tires, says Kurnik, the 2006 Grand Vitara has an "accurate, composed feel."

To help the driver maintain control, particularly in emergency maneuvers, the car has stability control, traction control and anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution.

After the anti-lock brakes, the high-value item there is the stability control system that does a better job of keeping the vehicle out of a skid than any driver can because it can apply one brake at a time.

Grand Vitara buyers who select the four-mode full-time four-wheel drive system (JLX-Leather) get "out most advanced system," says Kurnik.

"This system offers the same refined road-going capability and ease of use as the full-time four-wheel-drive system," he says, "but drivers have the option to lock their center differential in both a 4 HI mode as well as a 4 LO mode for more demanding off-road situations."

Vehicles equipped with the four-mode system also can be towed with four wheels on the ground in neutral mode to reduce driveline wear and tear, as well as prevent odometer accumulation.

Interior features are extensive, says Kurnik, including climate control air conditioning and micron air-filtration system, cruise control, remote keyless entry, digital clock with outside temperature and fuel consumption indicators, and an adjustable center armrest with internal storage.

An AM/FM/CD/MP3/WMA XM Satellite radio-ready audio system and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls is also standard, while JLX and JLX-Leather models include a six-disc in-dash CD-changer with seven speakers.
