Next-Generation Compact Suzuki 4x4 Expected in 2006

Suzuki is on a bit of a product offensive as of late. A new subcompact Swift has joined the ranks as has the Verona, the first midsize sedan entry in the brand's storied history.

What's next? Probably not the best news for fans of the brand's stalwart SUVs. Despite the goodwill Suzuki has built up around its Vitara compact sport utility, it will go out of production at the end of the 2004 model year.

Suzuki has built up a strong and loyal customer base on the back of reliable little sport utilities, first offered in North America in the mid-'80s as the Samurai.

But take heart Suzuki 4x4 fans, not all is lost. While the Suzuki/GM joint venture plant in Ontario that builds the current model will soon be producing only the new Chevy Equinox, a small SUV replacement bearing the Suzuki nameplate is expected within a year or two.

Whether it will be built in Canada alongside the Equinox is not being said, but word has it future Suzuki models, whether cars or SUVs, will be fabricated in the Ontario facility. Two such vehicles could be a midsize crossover vehicle and/or station wagon that are expected within the next few years.
