Audi has equipped 13,000 cars with a wireless system that allows for two-way payment communications between car and parking facility – no more tickets and change required!

A pilot project is underway in Ingolstadt, Germany. Audi operates nine parking lots across the city totalling 6,200 parking spaces as well as 21 entry and exit points.

When approaching a parking facility, the system recognizes the owner-specific RFID transmitter mounted on the windshield of the vehicle, keeps tabs on the parking times, and automatically debits charges from the user's account every month. It can all be activated online through a smartphone app.

Eventually, Audi would like to combine wireless parking payment with parking assist so drivers could find the nearest available parking space and get there easily.
