This Wednesday marks the return of theextremely popular BFGoodrich Tires Challenge, a weekly event organized by theSaint-Eustache Autodrome and BFGoodrich Tires Canada, held Wednesday nightsfrom 6:30pm to 11pm.
"We hope to reduce illegal street-racing by giving speed buffs the chanceto participate in drag races in a legal and controlled environment at theSaint-Eustache Autodrome," explained Mr. Paul Deslauriers, Director of theAutodrome. "The success of last year's initiative completely surpassed ourexpectations and we added an additional night (Thursday) to the venue in orderto accommodate numerous participants."
The BFGoodrich Challenge, the first event of its kind in the country,quickly gained in popularity with Montreal speed fans. The premiere was heldon September 4, 2002, and 200 vehicles and 1,000 people took part. Within oneweek participation more than doubled when 500 vehicles and 1,200 peopleattended. Weeks later, there was no denying the overall success of the eventwhen close to 900 vehicles and 2, 400 people passed through the gates at theAutodrome.
"We anticipate seeing the same type of participants as we did last year,"added Michaela Yasin Brand Manager for BFGoodrich Tires in Canada, "mainlyyoung men. However, the number of women participating in the races isincreasing. The most common vehicles seen at the event were import sportcompacts, but luxury cars were also on hand (Porsche, BMW, Cadillac). We evensaw a vintage Corvette 1957 hit the strip one night!"
The BFGoodrich Tires Challenge will be held every Wednesday evening from6:30pm to 11pm at the Saint-Eustache Autodrome, from May 7th to the end ofOctober. The price of admission is $5 per person.
