Honda made engineering changes to the 5-speed manual transmissions of the 2008 Fit, Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe models. The resulting lower fuel economy rating (under 6.5 L/100 km) qualifies them for a $1,000 rebate as part of the federal government's 2008 ecoAUTO program.

In addition, Honda Canada is offering a $750 gasoline card for all automatic transmission-equipped 2008 Fit models. The high-performance Civic Si Coupe and Sedan are not eligible for any rebate, however.

The Japanese automaker's research and development teams worked very hard within an incredibly short period of time to make the necessary changes to allow manual transmission-equipped Fit and Civic models to qualify for the rebate program. While these changes are quite significant, they do not compromise the full assortment of standard safety features. Therefore, Canadians are not forced to choose between environmental concerns or personal safety when buying a vehicle, regardless of its price or size. This is what the company calls the "Honda Benefit".
