9. Chevy introduces the articulated brake shoe
In 1930, Chevrolet was the first to introduce an articulated brake shoe that allowed for a positive braking action. Think of it as an early-day brake pad – a very primitive version! Before Chevrolet introduced the articulated shoe, braking was achieved by slowing down the engine and transmission, thus slowing the wheels. Band brakes were also used, but not very effectively.
