Front centre airbag/Inflatable seat belts
GM looked at ways to minimize side-impact injuries and came up with an airbag that deploys from the right side of the driver’s seat and positions itself between the front-row seats near the centre of the vehicle. This tethered, tubular airbag is designed to provide restraint during passenger-side crashes when the driver is the only front occupant, and also acts as an energy-absorbing cushion between the driver and front passenger in side-impact collisions. Simple, effective, brilliant.
Meanwhile, Ford was the first to introduce inflatable seat belts to provide additional protection for rear-seat passengers, who often are children or older adults more vulnerable to head, neck and chest injuries.
