If you asked, most drivers would say they look no further than the bumper of the car in front of them when they're on the road. This is a huge mistake. In order to be a safe driver, you should be looking well beyond the car in front of you as this is generally where the “problem” will occur. Consider everything around you and be aware of other car's intentions and moves. If you look ahead, you will give yourself more time to react.
