Some of the most popular Tacoma models would include the 4X4 Access Cab V6 models that start at $29,560, the PreRunner for $31,535 and up, and the Doublecab for $32,310 and up.

For someone who just wants to tap into Tacoma's size and history, the starting place would probably be 4X2 Access Cab.

This comes with a 2.7-litre V-6 that develops 159 hp at 5,200 rpm and 180 lb-ft of torque at 3,800 rpm, which will work okay for picking up something like an Egg McMuffin and a large coffee following Tacoma's recent growth. Get beyond that in terms of cargo and the engine tends to get winded.

The standard gearbox on the 4X2 Access Cab is a five-speed manual with overdrive, though a four-speed automatic is optional.

The anti-lock brake setup on the basic Tacoma is ventilated discs up front and drums in the back, with Electronic Brake Force Distribution helping to keep the stops smooth under a variety of load conditions.

For the growing number of people who want to customize their pre-packaged Tacoma a little, Toyota offers "a range of choices for work and play," including hard and soft tonneau covers, a tool box, trailer hitch and wiring harness, an interior bike rack, exterior fork mounts, side step bars, running boards, and such accessories for the truck bed as a bed mat, cargo dividers, tie down hooks, a bed extender, and more.
