With the strong dollar, Canadian consumers are refusing to pay premiums on their new cars and trucks. In the past weeks, there have been a slew of price adjustments announced by virtually every major automaker selling in North America. The intent is to keep Canadians buying cars in Canada as opposed to heading stateside to purchase the same vehicle for thousands less.

Toyota has just announced that the 2008 Sequoia and the new 2009 Corolla, Matrix, Camry and Camry Hybrid are going to provide additional value to Canadian shoppers. The models all launched this month, hot on the heels of the latest MSRP "adjustments" on 16 other Toyota and Lexus vehicles.

For instance, the all-new Corolla model now starts at $14,565- the same as it would have cost in 1997. The Corolla-based Matrix, also new for 2009, starts at $15,705. This represents a savings of nearly $1,500.

Selected Camry models receive more standard features for this model year- including a power sunroof and anti-theft system. The MSRP has been lowered as well, and the 2009 Camry now starts at $23,400, with hybrid models opening at $30,660.

The big and capable Sequoia SUV packs a 5.7 litre V8 with 381 horsepower, increased towing capability and better mileage. This year, it will start at $44,675- the same MSRP as 2001.

"We are pleased to make things better for those considering purchasing, leasing or financing these popular models, which together accounted for almost half of our 2007 Canadian sales," explained Stephen Beatty, Managing Director at TCI. "We will continue to monitor the Canadian market and take action to provide transparent and consistent value for our customers."
