Across the lineup, Sienna is powered by a 3.3-litre DOHC V-6 that produces 215 hp and 222 lb-ft of torque at 3,600 rpm, which Wearing says is good "for brisk acceleration and effortless highway cruising."
Sienna is fitted with a five-speed Super ECT (Super-intelligent Electronically Controlled Transmission) that manages shift decisions based on engine speed and load. The only questionable aspect of this transmission is that the gearshift is on lower control panel of the
dashboard, which may bother traditionalists but has no real bearing on the vehicle's driveability.
Toyota Canada wisely made all-wheel-drive available on every trim level, since this can be very helpful on compromised road surfaces.
For enhanced traction and driving control under all driving conditions, all Sienna models are also fitted with an anti-lock brake system enhanced with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA).
EBD adjusts for minute front-to-rear speed differences to prevent wheel lockup, and BA interprets a fast application of the brake pedal as emergency braking and unobtrusively exerts additional brake pressure for short, controlled stops.
Sienna CE is equipped with ventilated front disc brakes and rear drums, while LE and XLE get solid rear discs.
Sienna LE AWD and XLE trim levels are further outfitted with a Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system, including Traction Control (TRAC). Using a yaw sensor in conjunction with the ABS and TRAC systems, VSC enhances cornering stability, using both throttle intervention and brakes to correct oversteer and understeer. This again can be very helpful on compromised surfaces.
Sienna's suspension uses MacPherson struts in front and a twist beam independent suspension in the rear for what Wearing calls a "comfortable, compliant ride."
Wearing further claims that Sienna's interior "is extraordinarily flexible," thanks mostly to seats that can be configured in 17 different ways to handle both people and cargo.
The captain's chairs in the centre row can be folded flat and tumbled separately, Wearing explains, and can be positioned with an aisle in the middle or as a partial bench on the left side.
On eight-passenger CE and LE FWD models, the middle second-row seat can be repositioned closer to the front seats, placing a child closer to the driver or front passenger, and can also be folded down for use as a tray table.
The removable centre console box on seven-passenger LE and XLE models can be positioned between either the first- or second-row seats.
Both sections of the 60/40 split-folding rear bench can also be easily folded flat without removing the headrests, Wearing points out, and stowing them level with the cargo area floor creates the maximum amount of space for luggage and other freight.
Sienna has a "generous array of standard equipment for driver and passenger comfort and convenience," says Wearing. Front and rear climate control is standard on all models, with separate controls for both front and rear passengers. There are also power windows for the first two rows of seats, and remote lock control.
