Remember that Lexus LS 400 ad from 1989, where the automaker was trying to demonstrate how little the car’s engine vibrated by piling 15 champagne flutes on the hood and revving the motor until they fell off?

Well, Jeff from Arizona tried to recreate the experience with his 2011 LS 460 to see if there was any truth to the ad. Unfortunately for him – and his paint job – he was forced to conclude that the glasses needed to be stuck firmly in place. His experiment, though using only 9 glasses, was unsuccessful.

After witnessing these foibles on YouTube, Lexus claimed that the feat was indeed possible, at 5,300 rpm with a 2011 Lexus 460 and 4,000 rpm with a 1990 LS 400.

How’d they do it? With 15 quality flutes and a level hood.
