3:30 PM - Volkswagen introduces their new Jetta, which will go on sale as a 2006 model.
The new 5th generation Jetta is said to be 60% stiffer than the current 4th gen model. It will feature electromechanical steering and will be available with a 2.5-litre 5-cylinder that develops 150 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. A 1.9-litre Diesel TDI will be available later, and the GLI version will sport a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine producing 200 horsepower.
Also on display, the New Beetle Ragster Concept, with a roof that's chopped down by 4 inches and features a ragtop section that opens up, just like certain original Beetles and Renault 5s had.
Although the new Golf is on sale in Europe and pictures of the new Passat are circulating on the Internet, they were not present at Detroit.
