Volkswagen Launches Canada-Only Jetta Sport Diesel
Volkswagen Canada has begun selling 2,000 units of the Jetta TDI Sport Edition model exclusively in the Canadian market.
The differences between the Sport Edition and the regular Jetta TDI are mostly cosmetic, as both cars come equipped with the same powertrain. On the other hand, that powertrain does get the new version of the 1.9-litre inline-four, which gets more power than the previous engine.
The MSRP on the 5-speed Tiptronic automatic (which let's the driver shift it like it's a manual) is $28,300, while the model with the standard transmission is $26,900.
VW Canada undoubtedly hopes that this special model of its best selling model will help turn around the automaker's overall sales, which have dropped over 30 percent so far this year.
Standard equipment includes 16-inch allow Bugatti rims, sports tuned suspension and TDI badging. Interior features include sport seats and leather on the three-spoke steering wheel, handbrake and shift knob.
The Jetta TDI Sports Edition comes equipped with a 1.9 litre Pumpe Duse four-cylinder diesel that has more horsepower and torque than the 2003 TDI. The 2004 engine develops 100 hp at 4,000 rpm and 177 lb.-ft. of torque at 1,800 rpm, compared to last year's 90 at 4,000 rpm and 149 at 1,800 rpm.
Because part of the charm of a diesel is its fuel economy, buyers will also care that the manual transmission achieves a fuel economy rating of 6.2 litres/100 km in the city and 5.1 litres/100 km on the highway.
Standard safety features include front and side air bags for both driver and front passenger, anti-lock brakes on all wheels, and Engine Braking Assist, a system that helps prevent skidding in wet conditions.
The special edition model is available in three exterior colours -- Platinum Gray, Reflex Silver or Spice Red -- and there are only three options available: ESP ($430), power sunroof ($1,015) and side airbag curtains ($220).
There is a 4 Year/80,000 km New Vehicle Limited Warranty along with 24-hour roadside assistance.
