Toyota’s reign as the number one manufacturer might not last much longer! In a press release, Volkswagen has announced that they invest an enormous sum of 72 billion dollars CDN in order to dethrone Toyota as the bigger global automaker.

With over 57% of that investment targeted at their properties, assembly plants and equipment, the German giant affirms that these funds will serve to spread and modernize the product line-ups of their Bentley, Porsche, Lamborghini, Volkswagen, Skoda and Seat brands. Hybrid powertrains and electric vehicles will get some extra attention, areas where Toyota shines brightly.

New powertrains have also been announced in order to improve performance as well as lower fuel consumption and emissions. A new plant will be built in Chattanooga, Tennessee to support the American market, and production capacity in Russia will also rise.

This sum confirmed by Volkswagen doesn’t include their Chinese joint ventures that will fund their own 14.8-million investment until 2015.

It will be an interesting King of the Hill match between Toyota and Volkswagen!
