Volvo's adding a turbocharger to their acclaimed straight-six powerplant for the 2009 model year. Debuting in the XC70, the powerful new engine will be paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and an all wheel drive system.

Horsepower is on the rise everywhere, and this new powerplant promises to help keep Volvo in the game. "The T6 adds an extra dimension to the engine range," says Hans Wikman, VP of Large Cars at Volvo Car Corporation. "The engine has been programmed to provide the highest possible performance with the lowest possible fuel consumption and exhaust emissions."

It's based on the current 3.2 liter engine used by the Scandinavian automaker- though de-sized down to 3.0 litres and bolted up with a high-tech turbocharger for an increase of nearly 50 horsepower, to a total of 281. Torque is rated at just shy of 300 lb.-ft, and peaks from 1,500 RPM.

The turbocharger uses twin-scroll technology, accepting engine exhaust gasses in two stages. This results in minimized turbo-lag and sharper acceleration similar to a twin-turbo engine. Drivers can expect smooth driveability and fantastic performance from the engine as equipped to the XC70. Pricing will be available closer to the XC70 T6's on-sale date.
