In ordering extra safety equipment, you really should consider your regular driving circumstances and try to equip the vehicle accordingly.

For example, if you drive in areas where winter conditions are bad, you want to be sure you get snow tires and stability control to help reduce the chance of losing control on ice, and crash-notification.

If you live somewhere where fog is a regular issue, consider active cruise control, since it will keep you from driving into the back of a stopped vehicle that you can't see in front of you.

If you live anywhere where it gets cold, you might also want to think about carrying a bunch of blankets and candles for heat if you get stuck on the road, and keeping your tank filled so you can run the engine for extra warmth.

Having the safest vehicle for you is a lot more complicated than it looks at first blush, but the biggest, most agile and newest OnStar-equipped vehicle you can afford is always a good place to start.
