Volkswagen has confirmed its return in World Rally Championship for 2013 during a press conference on Thursday before Rally Sardegna.
The german brand managers have announced that they will develop a WRC version of the new Polo R, with the first race car expected to have its first tests at the end of 2011.
Volkswagen ran successfully in rally raid those last seasons, especially in Dakar rally where the german brand took victory in 2009, 2010 and 2011. No driver annoucemet yet, but it is known that Carlos Sainz is involved in the VW WRC program, and should drive the test car later this year.
Nasser Al Attiyah, who races under the VW colours in rallye raid (he won last Dakar rallye in January) is racing in world championship rally in the S2000 category, after he took several rally Middle East championship in the past. The man from Qatar is among of the main favorites to drive the Polo WRC in competition.
Volkswagen will join Citroën, Ford and Mini, already involved in WRC.
