Sebastien Bourdais needed revenge on the 2.104-mile Fundidora Park road circuit in Monterrey, Mexico after taking pole position and failing to convert in his 2003 rookie season source: cart.com The sophomore French driver of Newman/Haas Racing¹s #2 McDonald¹s Lola/Ford Cosworth/Bridgestone challenger in Bridgestone Presents the Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford performed flawlessly in his second try at the second race of the 2004 racing year. Bourdais dominated both qualifying sessions and the 72-lap fourth annual Tecate Telmex Monterrey Grand Prix, leading the most laps, setting fastest tour and finishing 3.852 seconds in front of teammate Bruno Junqueira¹s #6 PacifiCare Lola. Bourdais now holds the point lead (63) over Junqueira (57) and seventh-finishing 2003 champion Paul Tracy¹s #1 Indeck Lola. Bourdais¹ team made a myriad of changes from warmup to race and those adjustments worked out perfectly. ³We shifted the weight, changed the front wing, did so many things it¹s unbelievable it all worked out,² Bourdais revealed. ³It was a very good race between me and Sebastien. We were much faster than everybody, Junqueira added. National favorite Mario Dominguez took the final podium spot in the #55 Herdez Lola, going from second to 18th and last to third in a typically stirring drive that gained him a point for biggest position gain. Canadian veteran Patrick Carpentier took fourth place in the race and retains fourth place championship points with 48, one in front of Dominguez. Alex Tagliani brought the #8 Johnson Controls Lola to fifth and rookie Justin Wilson earned sixth place points for the #34 Mi-Jack/Conquest Lola. A crowd of more than 94,000 enjoyed an incident-filled contest with six caution flags. Even so Bourdais and his 17 pursuers set a new race time record of 1:45:01.498. Lola runners comprised all 13 finishers of the sun-drenched event. The Champ Car World Series resumes the evening of Saturday, June 5th with the Time Warner Cable Road Runner 250 on the historic Milwaukee Mile.
