Patrick, the 2005 Bombardier Rookie of the Year who was the first female to lead a race lap in the Indianapolis 500, joins Martina Navratilova as athletes featured in the article. Others include entertainer Queen Latifah, NASA CFO Gwen Sykes, "Today" co-host Meredith Vieira, Brown University president Ruth Simmons, political campaigner Mary Cheney and violinist Sarah Chang. In the article, Patrick says her competitiveness started "right away" as a 10-year-old racing go-karts. It continues today in the IndyCar Series racing a sleek, 650-horsepower car at 220 mph.
