Motor racing bid an emotional farewell to a very special man
Sunday in Lausitz, when Alessandro Zanardi drove what is thought to be the few
final miles of his career.
source: pitpass.com In 2001 the popular Italian was lucky to escape from a horrific accident at the Lausitzring in Germany and though the Italian has since hinted at some sort of come-back today he decided to close that particular chapter of his life by bidding a fond farewell to the sport. Earlier this year Pitpass.com ran a feature on Zanardi which showed what a very special Alessandro is, and in all honesty no further comment is necessary. The weekend that the Italian had his dreadful accident is forever embedded in our minds for it happened over the course of the Italian GP weekend in 2001, just days after the New York and Washington atrocities. The news of Zanardi's injuries compounded a horrific week and Michael Schumacher wasn't the only one that had no taste for racing that weekend. Recently Alessandro announced that he intended to 'complete' his final race, by running the 13 laps that remained before his freak accident. Today he drove those final few miles and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. "I owe this to you," the Italian told the crowd that had come to witness his last farewell to motor sport. "I have so much German blood in my veins that I'm almost German now," he added, referring to the countless transfusions he needed in the days following the accident. "I wanted to enjoy one last time that incredible feeling you have when you drive a racing car at high speed," he told reporters. "It was fun, but that was it for me as a racing driver," he added. "I love my family and I don't want to lose them."
