Over the last week, Champ Car Atlantic Series runner-up and son of former Champ Car champion, Bobby Rahal stated he would not race in the A1 GP series. source: paddocktalk.com - rumors Reports indicate that the soon to be 18 year-old driver is close to signing a contact with Newman-Haas Racing. The A1 GP schedule and Champ Car schedule only collide on one weekend, the Champ Car season opener in Long Beach. However, the team may want Rahal to sign soon, to avoid any possible injury and be ready for the season opener, as well as testing the new car for the 07 season. The series desperately needs American content especially since A.J. Allmendinger left for NASCAR this season. Rahal and Alex Figge appear to be the only Americans likely in the series for next year. Additionally, Rahal's plans fell through for a competitive ride in the GP2 series, but looking ahead Rahal may use this as a stepping stone to a Formula One ride. In the meantime, the Rahal is apparently headed to Mexico City for the Champ Car season finale. Some speculate an announcement between the team and Rahal could be announced this weekend. The PaddockTalk Perspective: There is always a need for big American names in open-wheel. Graham may be what the sport needs to bring more exposure to the series in the USA. Being on a top team like NHR, will only help his cause. We do feel a deal is extremely close to being signed...perhaps the ink is still wet.
