"My motivation in life is to be alive." Zanardi source: F1press.net Alex Zanardi, in the past year or so, has touched the entire racing world in one way or another. And the great Italian, after gracing Formula One in the Nineties and becoming one of the greatest CART racers, is celebrating his 36th birthday at home in Monaco today. While heading to a brilliant come-back victory at the inaugural German 500 last year, Zanardi lost control of his Champ Car whilst re-entering the circuit after a pit-stop. His life would never be the same again. In an earth-shattering explosion of carbon-fibre, the always-smiling charger was struck at over 300kmh by Alex Tagliani. Death knocked vigorously at the great driver's door as the horribly injured Zanardi's blood spilled onto the Lausitzring tarmac. 'I was very anxious from the first minute to really step on these prosthetic legs, I wanted to walk and hold my son on my shoulders,' says Zanardi as he ponders his new life. Induced into medical coma, both of Zanardi's legs were amputated above the knee. While the world held its collective breath, our hero laid at the whim of a few German doctors. In true fighting-form, the kind witnessed on Europe and America's racing tracks, Alessandro Zanardi has bounced back from the brink of death to walk proudly on his 'new' legs.
