Mother nature will keep teams guessing source: irl.racing-live.com - ORS / CAPSIS International Historically, one of the biggest concerns during the 'Month of May' at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the weather. 2006 will be archived no differently as once again half the battle has been against 'Mother Nature.' First, nearly every day of scheduled practice was affected by rain, then the entire first weekend of qualifying was completely washed out. Now, as race day nears, the forecast calls for temperatures to be around 87 degrees (F) - or about 15 degrees higher than any practice or qualifying session to date. "It's a giant guessing game when it is something that is different than what it's been all month long," said pole winner Sam Hornish, Jr., who also noted that the humidity was coming up which greatly affects an Indy car's aerodynamic efficiency. "The only good thing is the fact that (Carb Day) is going to be hot, but I don't know if it is going to be that warm." According to local meteorologists, "Carb Day" will max out at 78 degrees although temperatures will likely be cooler when the 11:00am practice session is run. (The race will start at 1:00pm on Sunday). Several drivers believe higher race day temperatures could actually work in their favor, including 1996 Indy 500 winner Buddy Lazier.
