American race car driver Scott Speed got up to speed very quickly in his first ever outing in the Dragon Racing IZOD IndyCar Series car during a scheduled rookie test held Tuesday at Chicagoland Speedway.
The former Toro Rosso Formula 1 and NASCAR driver has partnered with Dragon Racing in an attempt to qualify for the upcoming Indianapolis 500. Yesterday, he completed about 50 laps on the 1.5-mile, high-banked oval of Chicago in preparation for the Rookie Orientation Program (ROP), during which he'll join six other first-year competitors on the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 12. Also on hand, were Dragon Racing/Sam Schmidt Motorsports Ho-Pin Tung and 2005 Firestone Indy Lights champion Wade Cunningham of Sam Schmidt Motorsports, who will make his IZOD IndyCar Series debut at Texas Motor Speedway on June 11. Scheduled to join Speed and Tung at ROP are JR Hildebrand (National Guard Panther Racing), James Hinchcliffe (Newman/Haas Racing), James Jakes (Dale Coyne Racing) and Charlie Kimball (Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing), Pippa Mann (Conquest Racing) and Jay Howard.
