Following his indictment for tax evasion, Team Penske's Helio Castroneves appeared before a Miami federal court yesterday afternoon and pleaded innocent to charges of tax evasion and fraud.
Castroneves faces seven charges - each carrying a maximum of five years in prison. Witnesses in the court reported that the Brazilian was handcuffed and shackled in the courtroom and wept during the arraignment. He posted a $10 million bond and surrendered his passport. That means that Castroneves won't be able to attend the IndyCar race in Australia to be held later this month. Penske Racing executive vice president Bud Denker said it is too early to discuss Castroneves' future with the team.
