The sanctioning body of the IndyCar series, IRL has adopted a partly cost-saving rule and partly a competition enhancement where the uniformity (with a half-inch tolerance for caster adjustments) of the wheelbase used in oval racing will be restricted to 122 inches.
This new rule will be enforced starting this weekend at Kansas Speedway even though that ruling won't affect the cars on short tracks like Kansas because it is basic for every team to run the long suspension on the those types of ovals. On the long tracks it should make a difference because teams could run 118, 120 and 122 inches wheelbase and every possibility in between. The new rule will save money because, from now on, you only have one suspension so you don't have to have spares of 118, 120 and 122 plus all the bits and pieces that go with it. Also, the longer the wheelbase, the less sensitive in traffic will be all the cars. Photos: IRL
