The 2003 Bridgestone Presents the
Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford hasn't quite gone to plan for Bruno
Junqueira.
source: cart.com - David Phillips So far. After finishing runner-up to Cristiano da Matta and Newman/Haas Racing in the '02 Champ Car World Series, Junqueira replaced the Formula One-bound da Matta at Newman/Haas. Many expected Junqueira to pick-up where da Matta left-off, winning races left and right for Newman/Haas and clinching the Champ Car title by August. At the latest... But a funny thing happened on the way to Bruno's title romp: two races into the season, he's not leading the championship. What's more, he hasn't won a race. Why, he hasn't even won a pole position. Instead, Paul Tracy won at St. Petersburg and Monterrey. Worse, at least to some people's way of thinking, Junqueira's brilliant young teammate Sebastien Bourdais captured both pole positions. With just a third place at St. Petersburg and an fifth at Monterrey to show for his efforts to date, Junqueira is the first to admit his season is off to a disappointing start. And, in the same breath, to express confidence that the wins and, possibly, the championship, will come. "I was expecting not to win easily, because nothing is easy, but I was expecting better results," he says. "But unfortunately the first two races things were difficult for me and I had lots of problems.
