Hornish, beset by bumps and bobbles, holds off Franchitti at Milwaukee
source: Indy Racing League by Dave Lewandowski Sam Hornish Jr. and Dario Franchitti apparently enjoyed their spirited battle eight days earlier at Nashville Superspeedway so much that they set up a reprise in the latter stages of the ABC Supply Co. /A.J. Foyt 225 at The Milwaukee Mile. It was similarly scintillating on a steamy day at the nation's oldest racetrack. Whereas Franchitti prevailed over Hornish on the 1.33-mile concrete tri-oval, this day belonged to the pole sitter in the No. 6 Marlboro Team Penske Dallara/Toyota/Firestone by 0.3836 of a second over the 2004 race winner. Getting to the finish line first was anything but a Sunday drive. Hornish overcame nerve-racking situations in which his car fell back to fifth on Lap 17, wiggled coming out of turns, and made tire contact with teammate Helio Castroneves (temporarily knocking him out of the race) and Franchitti. The latter - on Lap 210 as they raced for the point - wasn't the end of the cars or action. Two laps later, Hornish's car drifted up the track in Turn 2, allowing Franchitti to scoot past. But Hornish was determined to get back in the fray, and passed Franchitti for the final time on Lap 217.
