Playa Del Racing, Inc., announced April 6 it has
filed an entry for the 89th Indianapolis 500, with IndyCar® Series race winner
Jaques Lazier as the driver.
The 89th Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for Sunday, May 29 at the Indianapolis
Motor Speedway. Entries must have been postmarked by midnight Wednesday, April
6.
Lazier, from Alta Loma, Calif., will drive the team's No. 21 Panoz/Toyota/Firestone
entry. Lazier will attempt to drive in the Indianapolis 500 for the fifth time.
His best finish is 13th as a rookie in 2000. Lazier drove in relief for Robby
Gordon in the 2004 Indianapolis 500 after Gordon had to leave the race during a
rain delay for NASCAR commitments at Charlotte, N.C.
Lazier, 34, younger brother of 1996 Indianapolis 500 winner Buddy Lazier, won
the IndyCar Series race from the MBNA Pole in 2001 at Chicagoland Speedway. He
also has extensive experience in Indy Lights, the American IndyCar Series and
SCCA competition.
Playa Del Racing, which loosely translates to "Beach Racing" in Spanish, was
founded in 2001 in the beach community of Playa Del Rey, Calif. Gary Sallee,
Susan Schafer, Jeff Brougher and Jon Herb are the owners of the team.
Sallee, a licensed, practicing attorney who lives in Indianapolis, returns to
the Indianapolis 500 after enjoying previous success at the "Greatest Spectacle
in Racing." He was a co-founder of Team Cheever, and Jeff Ward earned JPMorgan
Chase Bank Rookie of the Year honors in 1997 after finishing third at Indy for
the team.
