Volkswagen’s Sebastien Ogier was the early leader of Rally Argentina after winning Thursday night’s curtain-raising super special stage in Merlo.
Huge crowds packed the town centre as the rally visited there for the first time and they watched Ogier’s Volkswagen Polo R outpace teammate Andreas Mikkelsen and Citroen’s Kris Meeke by two-tenths of a second. However, disaster stuck Friday morning on SS2 when the Frenchman’s Polo-R stopped some 5km away from the finish line! Several other front-runners hit problems such as Andreas Mikkelsen, Thierry Neuville, Dani Sordo, Kris Meeke and Mads Ostberg. So after SS2, Kris Meeke (Citroen DS3) led from Dani Sordo (Hyundai i20, -32.7s) and Jari-Matti Latvala (VW Polo-R, -33.9s).
