The grades for CART's first-ever
night race Saturday at the Milwaukee Mile were good all across the board as
competitors, manufacturers, officials and fans turned a potential nightmare into
a pretty entertaining show for the fans and the TV viewers
source: cart.com - Robin Miller Other than a first-lap tangle that eliminated three cars, the drivers did a good job of handling the frigid weather and cold tires. Despite temperatures in the mid 40s, Bridgestone's tires were up for the challenge and provided plenty of grip for two-grooved racing; CART's 2003 aero package for ovals continued to be a winner; Racing under the temporary lights got a thumbs up from the drivers; And the hearty crowd of 34,000 proved once again that Milwaukee's fans are in a league of their own. While winner Michel Jourdain left little in the way of drama because he was so dominant in storming to his initial Champ Car victory, his supporting cast staged a nice battle behind him. The duel for second place between Paul Tracy and Oriol Servia featured some excellent side-by-side action all evening until Tracy was eliminated from the fray when his left-rear tire came loose. "It was close. I tell you, Paul didn't give me one millimeter extra, any corner, we were side by side," said Servia following his best-ever Champ Car result. "And I think I did the same with him. We were fair to each other and it was... It is nice to race like that. It was good, hard racing like it's supposed to be."
