Completing a lap at 214.404mph on his final full speed lap of the session,
Scheckter was able to place his Pennzoil Panther Racing IndyCar at the top of
the time sheet.
Scheckter's quick lap disrupted a Honda powered dominance of the top 12
positions, as last year's manufacturer titlist placed nine of their ten cars in
the first dozen slots. Tomas Enge joined Panther teammate Scheckter at the front
of the pack by running the sixth quickest time.
2004 Toyota Indy 300 second place finisher, Helio Castroneves was the leading
Toyota in the session, placing seventh with a fast time of 213.389mph.
The early morning practice session was run under nearly perfect conditions as
yesterday's clouds and rain have given way to sunny skies, 70 degree (F)
temperatures and light winds in South Florida.
Rookie driver Ryan Briscoe was involved in the only incident of the session as
he spun off the warm-up lane en route to the pit area and made significant
contact with the outside wall. The Target Ganassi team is now preparing his
back-up car for this afternoon's qualifying session.
