The weekend of the 2001 Italian GP is one that race fans will never forget. source: pitpass.com As they attempted to try and come to terms with what had happened in New York just days earlier, news came through from Germany that former CART Champion and F1 star Alessandro Zanardi had lost both his legs in a horrific accident in Germany. Months later we were all moved as the Italian races took his first steps in public, at the FIA Awards Ceremony in Monaco, needless to say there wasn't a dry eye in the house. At a time when the sport seems obsessed with money and viewing figures, it is important to recognise legends such as Alessandro who have given so much in the name of motor sport. This week Zanardi was the guest on the widely acclaimed 'No Triumph No Tragedy series on BBC Radio 4. Presenter, and award-winning broadcaster, Peter White, spoke to the Italian whose career was brought to a premature and horrific end, yet who remains philosophical about the events that have totally altered his life. Indeed Zanardi retains his keen sense of humour and a refreshing humility. Although he remembers little of the accident he still watches replays on video, why?
