Feature: Popular Used Rides for Maximum UtilityWhere top levels of fuel efficiency, versatility, and space are priorities, the mini-ute, mini-minivan and mini-SUV are tremendously appealing used-car buys. With the space busy families want, and the promise of infrequent stops to refuel, models like these are growing in popularity in the new-car market making the selection of used models even more tremendous than ever.
Here’s a look at some of the most appealing small, high-utility vehicles in the used-car market today, as well as what their owners love, and what they say you should check for when considering a used model. Read on if you’re planning to visit a used-car lot looking for a machine that’s big on space and small on fuel consumption. Remember: If you settle for a model that doesn’t have full service records, visit your favourite mechanic for a full fluid change and tune-up for maximum confidence, longevity, and mileage. 2004 to 2007 Chevrolet Optra Wagon
The Draw: Low resale values of this Daewoo-based Chevrolet station wagon combine with relatively solid reliability to make it the affordable highlight of our list. Look for a fuel-efficient 2.0L 4-cylinder on all models with automatic or manual transmission. Styling, comfort, and interior space, as well as ease of entry and exit, were all highly rated by owners. For the price, many of these owners confirm that the Optra Wagon is tough to beat for cargo capacity. Driving dynamics and braking performance are rated well, too. What to Check: Common sense used-car checks should be your starting point with this machine. Though the Optra Wagon looks solid where reliability is concerned, shoppers should ensure proper functionality from all interior accessories, check tire wear, fluids, and all lights. A test drive should see a fairly quiet ride that’s free of front end clunking or grinding over bumps, and the brakes should stop the car quickly and in a straight line. Note that any unusual vibration or squealing from the brakes indicates a problem, as does a spongy pedal that wants to go to the floor. Ensure the automatic transmission, if equipped, moves smoothly through its gate and engages the selected gear with no issue. Issues with sporadic performance or hesitation are likely caused by a bad engine sensor.
2004 to 2009 Toyota Prius
The Draw: The 2004 to 2009 Toyota Prius was big on space and even bigger on fuel economy. Toyota’s proven Hybrid Synergy Drive system turned out 110 horsepower thanks to the work of both a standard gas engine and electric motor. The hatchback/wagon body configuration turned in generous cargo space, and most last-generation Prius owners rave about exceptional fuel economy, great manoeuvrability, a quiet and comfortable city ride, and plenty of available hi-tech features. Relatively generous on-board storage capacity is also noted. What to Check: Niggling electronic issues will likely prove more prevalent than major drivetrain-related problems in this machine. Check the stereo system, digital instrument cluster, and navigation systems for proper operation, noting that owners have reported these components quitting sporadically. Look for a fluid leak that may be a sign of imminent failure of the Prius’ inverter coolant pump. Out-of-warranty repair costs could be upwards of $600 should this part fail, though Toyota issued a Technical Service Bulletin to address it. Ask the seller or local Toyota dealer for more information. An inspection by a dealer-trained mechanic trained on Toyota hybrid models is strongly advised.
2007 to 2012 Dodge Caliber
The Draw: Properly maintained, the Dodge Caliber looks reliable, and low resale values and heaps of on-board space put it in the top of its used-car class in terms of cubic-feet per dollar. Flexibility, versatility, and numerous thoughtful touches were highly rated by Caliber owners. Numerous engine and drivelines were available, as was All-Wheel Drive (AWD). What to Check: Used Caliber models should be inspected for suspension wear. “Listen” for signs of popping, grinding or clunking sensations from the vehicles underside as you travel over bumps, and “feel” for any slack in the steering system. Many owners have complained of premature wear of certain suspension parts, so have a Dodge mechanic inspect the Caliber you’re considering to be sure it’s safe, and not in need of expensive repair. No widespread issues were apparent with the relatively unproven CVT transmission, though shoppers are advised to be sure the factory maintenance schedule was adhered to for maximum long-term reliability. Triple check the ceiling liner for signs of a leaky sunroof (if equipped), and shake all doors, listening for signs of water trapped inside, which can be caused by blocked body drains.
2000 to 2006 Toyota Matrix
The Draw: This small crossover packed Toyota’s reputation for reliability into a lifestyle-focused, high-functionality package available with front or All-Wheel Drive (AWD). Look for 428 litres of cargo space, and a 1.8L engine. The XRS model offered more horsepower and performance. Automatic or manual transmissions were both available, depending on the model. Flexibility and a fun-to-drive attitude are highly rated by Matrix owners, as is relatively decent fuel consumption and wintertime traction in models equipped with the AWD system. Generous at-hand storage facilities were also highly rated. What to Check: Watch for a check engine light, which could indicate a number of problems including an emissions control fault or a bad oxygen sensor. Be sure to note the engine’s idling as well. It should be smooth and steady at around 700 rpm. With an automatic transmission, ensure that shifts occur with minimal hesitation and that no “slippage” is present. With a manual, be sure the clutch take-up feels smooth and positive, with no unusual noises or slipping. Tires should be evenly worn across the treads, and any heavy wear concentrated to one side of either tire could indicate an alignment issue. Check body panel edges, especially lower ones, for signs of rust, and ensure the hydraulic struts that hold the tailgate and glass open do so properly.
2006 to 2010 Volkswagen Jetta Wagon TDI
The Draw: Is this the ultimate Canadian car? The Volkswagen Jetta Wagon TDI offered up plenty of space, plenty of sensibility, and the promise of fantastic torque output and fuel mileage thanks to its legendary TDI engine. Most owners say they love the way their Jetta Wagon feels -- in terms of handling, ride quality, steering, and even acceleration. Interior styling, mileage, and a high-quality driving atmosphere are all noted as positives by current owners. Don’t miss high-end features like heated leather seats, automatic climate control, and premium stereo systems. What to Check: All electronic systems and features should be triple-checked for proper operation, including all windows, power seat adjustments, door locks, hatch release, and remote keyfobs. Note a check-engine light and determine why its illuminated if present. Some owners of models with manual transmissions have complained of premature clutch wear, so check for signs of slippage if you’re in a stick-equipped model. Note that smoke, especially at idle while the engine is warm, could be a sign of a bad turbocharger that’s on its way out. On-time, quality oil changes are key to the longevity of a turbocharger, so be sure the seller was fond of keeping up on this maintenance.
2006 to 2010 Mazda5
The Draw: The Mazda5 is what some folks call a mini minivan. It’s got a rear liftgate, sliding doors, and three rows of seating, but unlike most minivans, you can get a manual transmission to go with the standard 4-cylinder engine -- namely a 2.3L 4-cylinder with 153 horsepower. The availability of a manual transmission, good handling, relatively generous room, good mileage, interior layout, and easy-to-maneuovre sizing are all highly rated by Mazda5 owners. High levels of comfort and flexibility are also noted in this city-friendly family-hauler. What to Check: Brake wear, tire wear, and alignment issues are somewhat common here, so be sure to check the condition of the used Mazda5’s tires and brakes with the help of a mechanic, if need be. Ensure the CD player accepts and ejects discs properly, using a CD you’re not fond of to check -- just in case. Ensure proper operation of the steering-wheel mounted controls and remote door locks. Note that any steering heaviness or hesitation is likely the result of a faulty power-steering pump, which your favourite Mazda dealer can check out for you.
